Kit vs MailerLite is one of the most common choices for creators and small businesses picking their first serious email tool. Both have a free plan, both offer landing pages and automations, and both let you sell digital products. Yet they are built for different people, and their free plans are almost opposites.

In this comparison, I put the two side by side: free-plan limits, pricing in dollars and euros, automation, selling, and GDPR for UK and EU senders. Every figure comes from the official pricing pages and privacy policies, checked on 22 October 2026.

✔ Key takeaways

  • Kit’s free plan allows up to 10,000 subscribers but has no automated sequences. MailerLite’s free plan allows 250 subscribers but includes 3 automations.
  • At 1,000 subscribers, Kit Creator was $33/month and MailerLite Comfort $19/month (€17) when I checked.
  • MailerLite shows prices in USD and EUR. Kit showed USD only.
  • EEA and UK customers contract with MailerLite’s Irish company. Kit is US-based and relies on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
  • Pick Kit for a creator newsletter. Pick MailerLite for a budget-friendly small-business tool with automations from day one.

Kit vs MailerLite: the quick answer

If you are a creator whose main asset is a newsletter, Kit is usually the better fit. Its free plan lets you grow a big list, and its tagging and creator features are excellent. You can start with Kit for free and upgrade when you need automation.

If you run a small business, or you want automated emails without paying, MailerLite is the better value. Its paid plans start lower, it includes automations on the free plan, and EU customers deal with an Irish company.

💡 Rule of thumb

Big list, simple emails: Kit Free. Small list, automated emails: MailerLite Free. Growing creator business with sequences: Kit Creator. Small business on a budget: MailerLite Comfort.

Kit vs MailerLite style side-by-side cards comparing a creator-focused tool with a small-business email tool

Illustrative summary: Tool A is roughly the creator-focused option (Kit) and Tool B the small-business-focused option (MailerLite).

In short, Kit gives you more room on the free plan, while MailerLite gives you more features. That trade-off shapes almost every other difference below.

Free plans compared

The free plans are the biggest point of difference in Kit vs MailerLite, so it is worth looking at them closely.

Kit Free covers up to 10,000 subscribers with unlimited landing pages, forms and email broadcasts, plus tagging and digital product sales. However, it has no automated sequences, no visual automations, Kit branding stays on, and only one user can log in.

MailerLite Free covers up to 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails per month. In return, you get campaigns, 3 active automations with up to 5 steps each, 1 website, 1 landing page, 3 signup forms, 1 digital product or booking and 2 user seats.

⚠️ What happens when you hit the limit

MailerLite’s pricing FAQ says that when a free account goes over 250 active subscribers, sending is locked (campaigns and automations) until you upgrade or remove subscribers. Plan for that before a big launch.

So, a creator with a growing audience will outgrow MailerLite Free far sooner, whereas a small business that needs a welcome series right away will outgrow Kit Free sooner. For more on the basics, see my guide to email marketing for small business.

Pricing in USD and EUR

Both tools price paid plans by subscriber count. The table below shows monthly prices at 1,000 subscribers from the Kit pricing page and the MailerLite pricing page.

Plan (1,000 subscribers, billed monthly)USDEURGBP
Kit Creator$33/monthCheck current pricingCheck current pricing
Kit Pro$66/monthCheck current pricingCheck current pricing
MailerLite Comfort$19/month€17/monthCheck current pricing
MailerLite Power$39/month€35/monthCheck current pricing

A few notes on these numbers:

  • Annual billing: Kit says yearly saves 17%. MailerLite says yearly saves 10%.
  • Smaller lists: MailerLite Comfort starts at $12/month (€11) and Power at $25/month (€19) for 500 subscribers.
  • Kit Pro offer: Kit showed a limited-time first-year Pro discount ($50/month). Treat $66/month as the normal price.
  • Currency: MailerLite shows USD and EUR. Kit showed USD only, and neither page showed GBP, so UK buyers should check at checkout.
  • Trials: both offer a 14-day free trial of paid features, with no card required.

📌 Prices change

Both companies adjust pricing from time to time and may add VAT for UK and EU customers. Always confirm the final amount on the official page for your list size.

On price alone, MailerLite is cheaper at most list sizes. Kit costs more, but it bundles creator-specific features such as Recommendations, paid newsletters and a newsletter feed.

Automation and sequences

Both tools have a visual automation builder. On Kit, automations and email sequences start on Creator, with unlimited visual automations and sequences. My Kit review explains how a typical sign-up, tag and welcome-email funnel works.

On MailerLite, automations are available from the free plan. Free includes 3 active automations with up to 5 steps. Comfort raises that to 50 automations with 100 steps, and Power makes active automations unlimited, with multiple triggers per workflow.

So, for automation on a budget, MailerLite wins. For complex creator funnels built around tags, Kit’s builder is excellent, but you will pay for Creator.

Selling products and paid newsletters

Kit lets you sell digital products, paid newsletters, recurring subscriptions and tips on every plan. Its pricing page lists a fee of 3.5% + 30c per sale, including card processing.

MailerLite also sells digital products, bookings and paid newsletter subscriptions. Free allows 1 active digital product or booking, Comfort 5 and Power unlimited. For its exact sales fees, check current pricing on MailerLite’s site, because I could not confirm them on the pricing page.

If selling is your main goal, an all-in-one platform may be simpler. Systeme.io combines funnels, courses and email on a free plan. See my list of Systeme.io alternatives and the best free funnel builders for more options.

GDPR and data hosting

For UK and EU senders, data protection is often the tie-breaker. GDPR applies to you whichever tool you choose, but where the provider is based affects how data transfers work.

World map with an EU server, a US server, a GDPR shield and a consent form, showing data hosting in kit vs mailerlite

GDPR and data hosting at a glance: EU and US servers, consent and data protection.

Kit: its privacy policy says Kit is based in the United States and stores personal information on servers in the US and other countries. Kit states that it complies with the EU-U.S. and Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Frameworks and the UK Extension.

MailerLite: its privacy policy says customers with a billing address in the EEA, UK or Switzerland contract with MailerLite Limited, an Irish company in Dublin. Customers elsewhere contract with MailerLite, Inc., which is certified under the Data Privacy Framework. For exact server locations, check MailerLite’s data processing terms.

💡 GDPR checklist for either tool

Use clear consent wording, link your privacy policy on every form, sign the provider’s data processing agreement, and record where each subscriber signed up.

If you want an EU contracting party, MailerLite has the edge. If you are happy with a US provider under the Data Privacy Framework, Kit is fine.

How to choose in 4 steps

1

Define your business type

Newsletter-first creator, or small business that uses email for sales and updates?

2

Estimate your list in 12 months

Under 250 subscribers, MailerLite Free works. Up to 10,000 with manual emails, Kit Free works.

3

List the automations you need

If you need a welcome series now, compare Kit Creator with MailerLite Free or Comfort.

4

Check data and currency needs

EU billing in euros and an Irish contracting party favour MailerLite. A USD budget makes either fine.
